Affordable Care Act Information

Get quick answers about Obamacare laws and the Health Insurance Marketplace

The following information pertains to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and is intended as a resource for patrons.

The library cannot provide recommendations on care choices for individuals but we hope to make available the necessary information for patrons to make informed decisions that best suit their needs. It is against the State Law of Iowa for anyone to assist or give recommendations or advice to individuals filling out a health insurance application unless they are certified and recognized by the State of Iowa.

The New Law

The Affordable Care Act requires everyone legally living in the U.S. to have health insurance. You can shop for plans by phone, through a broker, at on-site enrollment locations, or at the online Health Insurance Marketplace. If you choose not to enroll for insurance, the law states that you will face tax penalties.

The Open Enrollment Period for 2016 coverage is November 1, 2016 – January 31, 2017. Individuals may also qualify for Special Enrollment Periods outside of Open Enrollment if they experience certain events. (See Special Enrollment Period and Qualifying Life Event)
