Summer Reading 2011
"Around the World at Musser Library"
Woop! Woop! It looks like the real, actual, hot air balloon WILL be going up on Tuesday, July 26 at 6 pm, at Discovery Park Environmental Learning Center! Be there with us to watch Froggy take flight over Muscatine!!!!!!

Travel round the world this summer through books, stories, programs, education, and just plain fun with Musser Library's Summer Reading Program. We will be highlighting one continent each week!
Summer Reading is generously co-sponsored by Friends of the Musser Library and Central State Bank!
Please join us for any of the following programs:
For all ages... Tuesdays at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm (unless times are otherwise noted).
Tuesday, June 14.... Antarctica: Drop in to make a penguin card for IPTV Kids' Club host Dan Wardell, who will be coming to Muscatine that evening at 5 pm, at the Environmental Learning Center at Discovery Park. This event is sponsored by Central State Bank. Weather permitting, we will launch Dan Wardell in an actual hot air balloon after his storytime session!!!!! Yes, really... as long as weather permits. And we will celebrate the icy continent of Antarctica with a snow cone machine.
Tuesday, June 21... Europe: Jason Dornbush from the Waterloo Grout Museum will be presenting fun science info and activities on some of the famous European scientists. Jason is the Muscatine native who has visited from the museum in past summers, lighting bubbles on fire, frying pickles on electrical wires, and showing off his potato gun. Goodness knows what he'll do this time... we can't wait to find out.
Tuesday, June 28... Asia: Enjoy a classical Indian dance presentation by Shweta Sarin and a children's Indian dance troupe from Iowa City.
Tuesday, July 5... Africa: An African fashion show! Details to be announced.
Tuesday, July 12... Australia: Australian picture story theater with storyteller DeAnne Wortman.
Tuesday, July 19... North America: Audrey from the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines will visit with some of the animals native to our own continent including a corn snake, a screech owl, and (if he's feeling fine and in a good mood) a baby alligator. This program will be held at 10:30 am and then at 1 pm instead of the usual 1:30. This is to help the live animals hold up better and be back on the road sooner.
Tuesday, July 26... Summer Reading Finale! What wild and crazy thing are we doing this year if 15,000 books get read? Well, we're actually not sure yet. But we can guarantee you will have a good time.

How Summer Reading Works: Read or listen to at least one book per week. Come into the library each week and write down your name, contact info, and the name of the book you read on an entry form, and give it to a librarian. This earns you one small prize per week, plus enters you in a weekly drawing for extra prizes. Two different times during the summer, the weekly prize will be a brand new paperback book, provided by Central State Bank.
Children reading on their own may enter each time they read a book. Children who listen to books may enter once per week.
For children reading chapter books, you may count each 100 pages as a “book”. For example, if you read Lois Lowry’s book The Giver, with 179 pages, you may fill out one slip for the first 100 pages and one slip for the last 79. This makes the weekly drawing more fair.
