Special Events
We love the boxes our usual programming fits into... but sometimes you just gotta get out and stretch your legs! When an event doesn't fit any other category, look for details here.

This year our special winter event will be the Thousand and One Nights, over the weekend of January 13 and 14, 2012.

Please plan on joining us for drama, music, information, physics, henna, magic lamps, genies, faux jewels, and all manner of fantastical fun about the Thousand and One Nights stories and the region they come from, which includes Asia Minor, the Middle East, and India.
This is the annual event where a free ticket is required in order to attend. Tickets will be given out beginning Thursday, December 22.
What can you expect from this event? Your ticket will give you a time to arrive for a short drama presentation in the large upstairs meeting room. When this is over, you may browse the different activities located around the library at your own pace.
Upstairs we will have all manner of fantasy activities such as Aladdin's Lamp Shop, Genies, Treasure buried in the Sand, Magic Carpet Crafts (see photo above), and more, including American Tribal Style Bellydancers.
Downstairs will feature activities based in history or culture, including a traveling exhibit from the University of Iowa Museum of Art, ancient science of the Hanging Gardens, geography and spices of the Silk Road, Sanskrit and Arabic writing activities, and the traditional art of hand-painting. Thank you to all the wonderful community volunteers who will make the 1001 Nights stories come to life at the library.
If you would like to volunteer at this event, or donate in some way, please contact Betty at the Musser Library.
